Things to do while in Inverness

Fort Cooper State Park
Fort Cooper is home to five miles of trails that wind through hardwood forests and Lake Holathlikaha, where you can canoe, picnic, and spot wildlife without another soul in sight. The park also preserves the site of an 1836 Seminole War battle, and every March hosts a living history reenactment that brings that chapter of Florida to life in a pretty remarkable way.

Cooter Pond Park
Cooter Pond sits right along Lake Henderson, steps from downtown, and connects directly to the Withlacoochee State Trail. Walk the boardwalk, watch the turtles and the occasional gator cruise through the tea-colored water, or lock up a bike and head into town for lunch.

Old Courthouse Heritage Museum
Built in 1912, the Old Citrus County Courthouse is hard to miss right in the center of town. Inside, the museum covers everything from the region’s Native American history to its citrus industry days. One of the more surprising details: the restored second-floor courtroom was used as a filming location for an Elvis Presley movie in 1961, and the restoration team actually used that film as a reference to get the details right.
When you’re ready to call it a day, Preservation Point is just a short drive from downtown Inverness on US-44.
